International community of positive women

Women's experience of living with HIV is often very different from men. The HIV women's project started in 1995 to support and advocate for the specific needs of women.

Our over all aim is to enhance the health and well being of HIV positive women and their families in South Australia. The project has 2 workers, a Coordinator and a Peer Support Worker who is an HIV positive woman. An active community of HIV positive women guides our work. We are part of a national and international network of positive women. This network contributes to raising awareness around the impact that HIV has on women's lives.

The HIV Women's project is committed to listening to and supporting HIV positive women, building community and advocating for gender equity. We work within a feminist and primary health care framework.

Australian research suggests that issues such as pregnancy and childcare, disclosure of HIV status, relationships and community involvement have different meanings for HIV positive women.

HIV positive women continue to be isolated and experience many barriers to full participation in the community. The project works in partnership with other key HIV agencies to redress any imbalance in our services.
