PROJECTS
State Young
Aboriginal Women's Committee
The State Aboriginal Young Women's Committee is representative of
young Aboriginal women from Aboriginal communities in rural, remote
and metropolitan areas of South Australia consisting of 26 members including
proxies. The committee was established in July 2006 in response to recommendations
from the first State Aboriginal Young Women's Forum held in conjunction
with the State Aboriginal Women's Gathering. The state forum came as
a priority recommendation from the State Aboriginal women's gathering
held at the Nutbush Retreat in 2004..
The Committee aims to:
- Provide a suportive, culturally safe and respectful environment for young women to network, support each other and discuss important issues relating to and impacting on them personally, their families and communities
- Provide a united voice on issues important and relevant for young Aboriginal women across South Australia
- Focus on leadership and mentoring to support and encourage young Aboriginal women to particpate in decision making processes in all areas of Government and non-government at a local, regional, state and national level.
- Identify and undertake professional development and training needs for committee members.
The Committee have identified the following project initiatives to
implement over the next 16 months:
- Development of a calendar and a magazine of the committee members entailing individual profiles of members with positive quotes and affirmations from the members. This project involves a professional photo shoot and story writing workshops
-
Further develop and formalise a mentoring and
leadership program which will involve members of the committee visiting
Aboriginal communities and conducting workshops/presentations to young
Aboriginal women. Promote positive role modelling to increase confidence
and self esteem.
